Pour ce nouveau Tête à tête, je retrouve une photographe de qualité avec laquelle j’ai eu la chance de travailler deux fois cette année. Nous nous sommes rencontrées début 2020, juste après la création de mon blog. Le courant est tout de suite passé et nous avons eu l’occasion d’échanger sur nos métiers respectifs et comment nous appréhendions nos carrières artistiques.

For this new Tête à tête à tête, I find a quality photographer with whom I had the chance to work twice this year. We met at the beginning of 2020, just after the creation of my blog. We immediately got into the swing of things and we had the opportunity to exchange on our respective professions and how we apprehended our artistic careers.

Ilana n’est pas une simple photographe, c’est une jeune femme militante et engagée, notamment concernant les méthodes employées lors des séances photos et le rapport photographe/modèle, mais aussi très concernée par la représentation du corps à travers ses clichés et ceux de ses confrères et consœurs.
Voici donc quelques petites questions auxquelles Ilana a eu la gentillesse de répondre avec son enthousiasme habituel.

Ilana is not just a simple photographer, she is a militant and committed young woman, particularly concerning the methods used during photo sessions and the photographer/model relationship, but also very concerned by the representation of the body through her pictures and those of her colleagues.
Here are a few short questions that Ilana was kind enough to answer with her usual enthusiasm.

– LE TÊTE À TÊTE –

Tu as récemment partagé l’évolution de ton travail sur Instagram. À quel moment t’es-tu dit que tu allais faire de la photo une carrière professionnelle ?
You recently shared the evolution of your work on Instagram. At what point did you think you were going to make photography a professional career?

Je pense que j’ai toujours voulu devenir photographe. Dès lors où j’ai commencé la photo il y a presque dix ans. Mais mes parents m’ont encouragé à poursuivre mes études que j’ai orienté en communication. En janvier 2020, j’ai commencé à développer mon entreprise en tant que photographe et suite à la perte de mon emploi d’appoint en avril, pendant le confinement, j’ai pris la décision de me lancer et de vivre pleinement cette expérience tant que j’en avais l’occasion. Et c’est les cas aujourd’hui, je vis de ma passion et j’en suis ravie ! En revanche, rien ne garantit que je serai photographe pour le restant de ma carrière. Je pense sincèrement que l’on peut avoir plusieurs vies professionnelles et que nous ne sommes pas destinés à faire un seul métier dans notre vie, tout simplement parce que l’on apprend de nouvelles choses et que l’on évolue tout au long de notre parcours.

I think I’ve always wanted to be a photographer. From the moment I started taking pictures almost ten years ago. But my parents encouraged me to continue my studies which I oriented in communication. In January 2020, I started to develop my business as a photographer and following the loss of my backup job in April, during the confinement, I made the decision to go ahead and live this experience to the fullest while I had the opportunity. And this is the case today, I am living from my passion and I am thrilled! However, there is no guarantee that I will be a photographer for the rest of my career. I sincerely believe that we can have several professional lives and that we are not destined to do just one job in our lives, simply because we learn new things and evolve throughout our career.

Cette année, tu as partagé en live ta soutenance de mémoire basée sur Instagram et l’estime de soi. Pourrais-tu nous expliquer le choix de ce thème ?
This year, you shared your Instagram-based memory defense and self-esteem live. Could you explain us the choice of this theme?

J’étais en dernière année de communication avec une spécialisation en marketing digital. Lorsque j’ai dû faire une thèse professionnelle pour la validation de mon cursus, j’ai choisi de m’intéresser aux réseaux sociaux et notamment à Instagram où je partageais déjà beaucoup d’informations sur les conséquences de la plateforme sur la santé mentale de ses utilisateurs. Donc le choix s’est présenté un peu comme une évidence.

I was in my last year of communications with a specialization in digital marketing. When I had to do a professional thesis for the validation of my curriculum, I chose to take an interest in social networks and especially in Instagram where I was already sharing a lot of information on the consequences of the platform on the mental health of its users. So the choice was a bit obvious.

Si tu devais décrire une séance avec Icphotographer en quelques mots, ça donnerait quoi ?
If you had to describe a session with Icphotographer in a few words, what would it be like?

C’est un peu comme un moment entre copines. Je suis très à l’écoute de mes modèles, on communique beaucoup et cela me permet de les mettre à l’aise face à l’objectif. C’est aussi un moment de fun et une occasion d’être bien avec soi-même, de prendre du temps pour soi. Et à en croire les retours de mes clients, on ressort avec un égo boosté et un peu plus de confiance en soi.

It’s a bit like a girlfriend time. I’m very attentive to my models, we communicate a lot and this allows me to put them at ease in front of the camera. It’s also a moment of fun and an opportunity to feel good about yourself, to take time for yourself. And judging by the feedback I get from my clients, we come out with a boosted ego and a little more self-confidence.

Tu es photographe le plus clair de ton temps, mais lorsque tu es modèle, comment te sens-tu face à l’objectif ?
You’re a photographer most of the time, but when you’re a model, how do you feel in front of the lens?

Je ne suis pas vraiment modèle, je fais ça plus pour m’amuser. Mais poser est un excellent exercice pour me mettre à la place de mes modèles. Il me semble essentiel, lorsqu’on est photographe, de passer devant l’objectif pour se rendre compte de ce que vivent et ressentent nos clients. Et comme n’importe qui, même si les premières minutes ne sont jamais faciles, je ne me prends pas très au sérieux et joue le jeu assez rapidement.

I’m not really a model, I do this more for fun. But posing is an excellent exercise to put myself in the place of my models. It seems essential to me, as a photographer, to go in front of the lens to realize what our clients live and feel. And like anyone else, even if the first few minutes are never easy, I don’t take myself very seriously and play the game quite quickly.

Aurais-tu un conseil à donner à une personne qui n’ose pas se lancer en tant que modèle ou photographe ?
Do you have any advice for someone who doesn’t dare to start as a model or photographer?

Cette réponse est valable pour tous les projets. Que vous souhaitiez entreprendre en tant que photographe, modèle photo ou autre. C’est un conseil que j’aurais aimé entendre bien avant de me lancer et qu’on m’a donné lors d’une masterclass du photographe Vincent Villaret. Croire en soi et ne jamais laisser quiconque nous dire que nous ne sommes pas capable que réaliser quelque chose. Si les autres l’ont fait et ont réussi, pourquoi pas nous. Essayer de trouver toutes les excuses du monde pour se décourager n’amène à rien. Tandis que le travail et l’audace, même si nous échouons, nous préserveront toujours des regrets.

This answer is valid for all projects. Whether you want to undertake as a photographer, photo model or other. This is a piece of advice that I would have liked to have heard long before I started and that was given to me during a masterclass given by the photographer Vincent Villaret. Believe in yourself and never let anyone tell you that all you can do is achieve something. If others have done it and succeeded, why not us. Trying to find all the excuses in the world to get discouraged doesn’t lead to anything. While work and daring, even if we fail, will always keep us from regrets.
